SR News: Baseball First, Then the NFL News

This just in: Albert Pujols, the slugging MVP first-baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals, has signed what is reported to be a ten year, $250-$260 million dollar contract with the Los Angeles Angels.  Great news for Pujols; great news for the Angels.  It looks like the Texas Rangers will have some serious competition during the 2012 season.  The Angels then followed that blockbuster by signing starting pitcher C.J.Wilson, formerly a starter for Texas, to a multi-year contract. Now on to the National Football League.  Have you ever wondered about the stability of an NFL player?  In other words, have you noticed how often there are new signings on teams during the season?  Well we thought we would break it down and give you a closer look at an average week in the NFL.

For the week just ended, the first week of December, the following happened in the NFL:

  • Eight new players were signed to contracts
  • Five players were acquired from waivers
  • Eighteen new players were added to practice squads
  • And a whopping 252 players were on the Injured Reserve List.

Clearly NFL football is a contact sport and clearly teams must deal on a daily basis with injuries that require constantly adding new players to replace the ones injured during the regular season.  It is not unusual, in fact, for players each year to be signed, released, signed, released, and signed again, all during a sixteen-game schedule.

The next time you are prone to suggest that all NFL players are pampered, overpaid athletes, remember that the average playing career in the NFL is barely five years; that most players can expect at least one serious injury; and that most players will play on multiple teams during their career.  This is obviously not the sport for someone looking for stability regarding living arrangements.
