Athlete Relocation Abroad: Buy or Lease?

It doesn’t happen very often, but on occasion we will have a client who plays his/her sport in a foreign country, and as you might suspect, this type of athlete relocation comes with a unique set of problems.

Not only is the transportation of possessions and belongings a logistical difficulty, but the athlete is also faced with a decision about housing in a city that is literally five-to-ten thousand miles away.

Do you lease?  Do you buy?  If you buy, how do you know what you are getting into in a foreign country? What special knowledge is necessary when buying or leasing property so far away?  What is the market like? Is it a good investment?  Will the resale of that property be a problem five years from now?  What are the legal ramifications of leasing? Is it a better investment to purchase rather than lease in the foreign country?

The average athlete and dare I say almost all athletes do not have the knowledge necessary to make these decisions.  Stated as clearly as possible, you need a professional who deals in foreign real estate transactions.  We are talking about profits or losses of hundreds of thousands of dollars, and when that kind of money is at stake, you want to make sure you are working with a real estate and relocation expert who knows everything there is to know about that particular area.

Athlete relocation can be stressful under the best of circumstances.  Relocating to a foreign country in no way can be described as the best of circumstances.  Work with a professional with a proven track record.
