Baseball Playoff Rosters

With less than twenty regular season games remaining in the 2016 MLB season, you’ll hear a great deal of talk in coming days about teams setting their baseball playoff rosters, so we thought we would take a moment to explain this process. Baseball playoff roster eligibility is determined by the following criteria:

  • Any player on the 25-man major league roster
  • Any player on the disabled list
  • Any players on the suspended list
  • Any player on the bereavement leave list
  • Any player in military active duty

As of midnight, August 31st, just before the major league rosters expand, is automatically eligible to be on a team’s post season roster.  In addition, if a player on that roster is injured, the club can replace that player with a player who was not on the major league roster at the end of August.

What about players added to the club when teams expand their rosters after September 1st?  Any of those players can play in the one game wild card playoff, which is considered a part of the regular season.

There is one other consideration regarding baseball playoff rosters.  During the playoffs, a club can change their playoff roster before each series, so playoff rosters may change from one divisional series to the next.

What does it all mean?

We’ll find out when the baseball playoffs begin at the end of September.
